What are the indications for the balloon installation?
Most often the balloon is installed for the patients with third stage of obesity, with weight of 85-120 kg, and when the patient needs to lose several dozens kilograms.
What are the contraindications for the balloon installation?
Main contraindications are gastric diseases where a foreign body may cause exacerbation. Mainly this is stomach ulcer. Therefore all patients undergo gastroscopy before the balloon installation.
How is the balloon installed?
The balloon is installed under general anesthesia. This is not a surgery per se but a procedure similar in difficulty to gastroscopy. The patient may leave the clinic in the same evening after the installation.
What does the patient feels with the balloon installed?
The most uncomfortable sensations are experienced in the first few days after the installation. These are the sensations of “overeating”, heaviness in the stomach, nausea. At the same time complete absence or sharp decrease of appetite is observed. In a week or two nausea is abated or vanishes and appetite appears. Usually (but not always) the patient loses 5-7 kg in the first week after the installation. Nothing substantial. The balloon action differs fundamentally from that of diets and drugs. Sense of hunger that is suppressed in some way is typical for all diets. Therefore end of treatment in case of dietary treatment is characterized by withdrawal syndrome, when the patient begins to eat more than before. As for balloon, when it is installed patient feels the sense of overeating, therefore withdrawal syndrome does not start after its removal.
