Rhinoplasty (nose shape correction)

Print

What is rhinoplasty?

Esthetic rhinoplasty (from Greek “Rhinos” - nose) is a surgery performed to correct shape and/or size of the external nose. The goal of the surgery is not only to change nose shape, but also to improve the patient’s appearance as a whole.

Indications for rhinoplasty

External nose shape and/or size correction to improve its appearance (from the point of view of the patient). The surgery can also be performed to eliminate congenital defects and deformations of the external nose and to liquidate consequences of traumas.

An obligatory goal of rhinoplasty is to normalize respiratory function of the nose or to keep it normal (functional nose surgery).

Are there any cicatrices after the operation?

We almost always perform closed functional rhinoplasty in our clinic. If “closed” method of the surgery is used, there is only one section in each nostril. They are not visible from the outside and after a time will be barely noticeable even during medical examination.

What can be expected after the operation?

Processes of tissue forming and reconstruction usually continue for up to 6-8 months after rhinoplasty. It is commonly accepted that final result of the surgery can be assessed not earlier than this time.

Reliable result that corresponds with the patient’s intentions is possible if the patient turns to qualified specialists that have considerable experience in performing rhinoplasty.

Is hospitalization necessary?

Usual term of patient’s stay in a hospital for this surgery is 2-3 days. Sometimes the surgery may be performed on a day patient facility basis.

What complications can occur after rhinoplasty?

Nasal edema is usually observed in the first days after the surgery, both external and internal, which may result in a stuffed nose. Bruises under eyes may appear that remain for 10-12 days. Slight edematization of external nose tissues can remain for 3-6 months but is usually unnoticeable for others. Such complications as infection, delayed healing or severe hemorrhage are very rare and can be prevented by quality preparation for the surgery that depends on the patient as well. Details of preparation are discussed during preliminary consultation.

How long is postoperative period?

Most patients can continue their work in 7-14 days after the surgery. There may be restrictions of the diet and some kinds of activity during the first months after the surgery. It is not recommended to wear glasses with heavy rim during 5-8 weeks after the surgery.
