Dermabrasion (polishing)

Print

Dermabrasion is the rotational polishing of the skin with abrasive milling materials.

This method is known for a long time. However, its use involves high surgical technique, experience, special antiseptic conditions of the operating room, availability of devices and instruments.

Dermabrasion technique is used for elimination of scars after inflammations, treatment of large birthmarks, and for elimination of wrinkles and folds around mouth.

Dermabrasion is a kind of polishing to make the skin smoother by removing its upper cellular layer with the revolving brush or milling cutter. Dermabrasion allows to remove thin cicatricles on the skin, wrinkles, small inverted cicatrices and “senile spots” caused by exposure to sunbeams. This method can be used if the patient’s skin type is appropriate for it. This must be determined by the doctor.

Just like it is recommended to stop taking aspirin before an operation, doctors recommend stop taking contraception preparations before dermabrasion because such drugs promote liquids hold-up and increase the probability of pigmentation of the renewed skin. It is also recommended to stop taking preparations used for treatment of acne at least 6 months before the dermabrasion.

The skin rarely gets infected after dermabrasion procedures. Sunbeams are more dangerous because they, as well as make-up, can cause very strong irritation. It is not recommended to stay in the sun for several months after the dermabrasion procedure.

Even experienced specialists are not guaranteed against complications after dermabrasions. These may be persistent skin reddening, brown pigmented spots, or bumpy scars.
